Ok, but that leaves the question whether \pardir or \mathdir decides
on start/end. Vafa clearly prefers \mathdir, but I am not so sure myself.

For Vafa to consider: \hangindent c.s. work on \pardir, and they cannot
take \mathdir into account because at the line breaking stage there is
no longer a math list, just a box.
