I think the best solution is to use a TeX distribution, such as TeX Live (you
can choose a minimal install if you want), and add your newer LuaTeX executable
to this distribution. You can either just replace the luatex executable by your
own version, but this may cause your executable to be replaced again by the
distro's version when you update your distro, or you can follow the procedure
explained (in French) here:
