Well, I certainly have to get to grips with directly entering Unicode
characters into the editor.  After finding out about

  M-x set-input-method RET TeX RET
  M-x set-input-method RET ucs RET
  M-x toggle-input-method RET

in Emacs, it works now.  Thanks for the hint!
