[l2h] l2h and recent netpbm

I've installed l2h 2002-1 with netpbm 10.2 on a redhat 7.2 system
and am having ugly problems with graphics. In particular, pstoimg
is calling pnmcrop in ways that cause errors (e.g. "option --left
requires an argument").

I *think* this is due to bugs in shhopt.c in netpbm, rather than a
problem in l2h, but I'd like to know if this is a known problem, or
an installation screw-up on my part.

In particular, are these releases meant to work together?

On that point, the l2h docs seem to suggest using a patched netpbm
from 1994, but comments in pstoimg seem to refer to later versions
-- are later versions "better"?
