Platform: SPARC Solaris 8

When attempting to build the above version of latex2html I ran into a variety of
which I'm finding difficult to resolve. Attempting to do something with the
docs so that i can read what common problems are resulted in problems since
I didn't know exactly the best way to do this. I cd'd into the docs
directory and did a make html, but that resulted in all sorts of problems

The software itself appeared to configure and build - but with this error:

checking for ppmtogif... /projects/gnu/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/bin/ppmtogif
checking if ppmtogif can make transparent GIFs... error
Execution of /projects/gnu/sparc-sun-solaris2.8/bin/ppmtogif did not produce
 expected output

This is my version of ppmtogif - it is quite new.

ppmtogif: Version: Netpbm 9.10
ppmtogif: Compiled Fri Jan 19 12:10:38 EST 2001 by user "lwv26"
ppmtogif: SYSV defined
ppmtogif: RGB_ENV='RGBDEF'
ppmtogif: RGBENV= 'RGBDEF' (env vbl is unset)

Could it be that the latex2html is expected a much older version?

Anyways, after I move into docs/ and do the make html, I start getting
these types of error:

gmake manual.stamp;
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/ldata2/TeX/latex2html-2K.1beta/docs'
latex2html -no_math -html_version 3.2,math -external_file manual -dir manual -info 0 -short_index -contents "node6".html -index "node11".html -biblio "node9" -no_auto_link -no_footnode -split 6 -link 6 -up_url manual.html -up_title "LaTeX2HTML" -prefix O -prev_url manual.html -prev_title "LaTeX2HTML" -down_url support.html -down_title "Installation" overview.tex
