Well, _if_ there (according to the AFM) are no unencoded glyphs in the font
to begin with, then you can just skip reencoding. Instead of e.g.

  \transformfont{manr8r}{\reencodefont{8r}{\fromafm{manr8m}}}

and later

  \installfont{manr8t}{manr8r, ...

just go

  \installfont{manr8t}{manr8m,

at that later point.
