MacTeX.dmg is an install package for Apple's installer. The package contains the complete TeX Live 2007 distribution of TeX, Ghostscript, ImageMagick, and the following front end programs
: TeXShop, LaTeXiT, BibDesk, Excalibur, and i-Installer. A custom install option allows users to bypass some of these packages if desired.

Downloading and Installing
To install TeX and the front-end programs, double-click on the MacTeX.dmg icon, which will open a virtual volume on your desktop entitled "MacTeX-2007". On this volume you will find the MacTeX-2007.mpkg, which can be opened (double-click on it) to start the installation.
The Welcome.rtf and ReadMe.rtf documents are displayed during the installation of MacTeX and provided here if you skimmed over them during the installation.

For a first look at the capabilities of TeX,
click on the "TeX Showcase" and "Welcome to TeX! Now What?"
links to the left and right. TeX is very versatile and can be used to typeset beautiful
documents in many languages and in different fields
(mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, linguistics, etc.).
Samples of TeX documents in these fields can be found by visiting the
TeX Showcase webpage.
To get started using TeX on Mac OSX, find the icon for the TeXShop program in the TeX subfolder of your Applications folder and drag this icon to the dock. You will interact with TeX using this program. Click on its icon to open TeXShop.
Read the documentation under the TeXShop Help menu to start typesetting with TeX.

To learn how to write in TeX, you need to read an instruction book. TeX is the same on all platforms, so any book on TeX will do.

The MacTeX Distribution is available on CTAN or on the TeX Collection DVD (free with membership of TUG or with many of the other Users Groups around the world). Redistribution of files from the MacTeX collection should be done with care after reading the License restrictions by copyright holders.
